This spring and summer have been a whirlwind of activity for our quartet with two premieres, many competitions, and travels to London, Japan, California, Missouri and New York. In March, we were fortunate to be the only American quartet selected to compete in the London International String Quartet Competition. One of the highlights was playing a concert at St. Martin-in-the-Fields Church for a capacity crowd. It was an incredibly moving moment for us during a high-pressure week. We played well in the competition, although we did not advance, and received some useful and insightful comments. Though competitions are always humbling when we don’t advance, this one was inspiring for us overall. Before our London trip, we had the pleasure of returning to Columbia, MO where we won the Plowman Competition in 2008. We had a great time playing our first Mendelssohn Octet with the Esterhazy Quartet who celebrates their 40th anniversary this year. Immediately following London, we played the US premiere of Sir John Tavener’s Towards Silence for four quartets at the Rubin Museum of Art. | Our performance at St. Martin-in-the-Fields Church during the London String Quartet Competition. Photo by: Yawara Watanabe | | | We are just now wrapping up a stimulating month of work in Southern California at La Jolla Summerfest. It has been a good balance of collaborating with many great artists and having time to work as a quartet. We have performed all sorts of piecesfrom Hindemith’s satirical Overture to the Flying Dutchman (a roast of bad orchestra playing) to Dutilleux’s Ainsi la Nuit, Webern’s Langsamer Satz, and Mendelssohn’s Octet. Sam has really come into his own with his pre-performance talks and was even mentioned in a review as having “charmed those present… with his explication of the work”. This has been a busy year of the Mendelssohn Octet for us. In addition to the Esterhazy Quartet performance and the Summerfest performance with David Chan, Cho-Liang Lin, Heiichiro Ohyama, and Carter Brey, we had the honor of playing it twice with our teachers, the Tokyo String Quartet. We have so much to look forward to in the fall. We are excited to return to Yale for our final year as the graduate quartet-in-residence and we will be starting our residency as the 2009-10 Ernst Stiefel Quartet-in-Residence at the Caramoor Center in November. We are collaborating with the Imani Winds at Yale and with David Shifrin at Yale and Zankel Hall. Inspired by our Caramoor residency, we are excited to announce a new series of programs entitled “Understanding…through music!”. The first program highlights Eastern European masters (Janacek, Ligeti and Smetana) and the second explores innovation in music through the Second Viennese School and Beethoven. The idea is to foster a layered understanding and appreciation of the music by connecting the music to the extra-musical events or contexts in which the work was written. You can read more about this at our website www.jasperquartet.com. Thanks so much for reading. We hope through these newsletters to keep you posted of our adventures during the year and keep in touch. We wish you all the best and we hope to see you soon!
